Seizure of More Than 20,000 Counterfeit Books in Delhi Anti-Piracy Operation

In a massive raid against book piracy, more than 20,000 copies of counterfeit books have been seized from an illegal printing/distribution network operating from Rohini, Delhi. This was done in collaboration with Penguin Random House India, Simon & Schuster India and Hay House.

It has come to light that an illegal printing setup is involved in the production of counterfeit copies of popular books written by famous authors both Indian and international. The above mentioned case sheds light on increasing trend of book piracy, especially the commercially successful ones.

Piracy is more than loss of sales for the publisher and writer. The counterfeited copy of the publication not only denies the royalties of the author and publisher but might cause trouble in the literary community as well, as poor quality copies might include printing mistakes, incomplete information and outdated material.

Besides, the raid has put focus on the requirement that has been making people buy pirated books in India. Price difference between pirated and authorized versions is an important reason why people prefer buying counterfeit copies of publications. Publishers and booksellers are trying their best to make reading affordable.

This latest exercise in Delhi is yet another important step in the battle against organised book piracy and stresses the need for collaboration amongst publishers, authors, law enforcement authorities, and book readers for the protection of the industry and its stakeholders.
